HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 175

Urging the Governor to retain the one percent tax on food and dedicate the revenue toward in-home senior care services.

    WHEREAS, The final percent of the food tax is scheduled to be phased out as of July 1^st, 2013; and

    WHEREAS, West Virginia currently gets $13.5 million a year in revenue through the one percent sales tax on food; and

    WHEREAS, This revenue could greatly benefit the senior citizen community, as funding for these programs have been reduced; and

    WHEREAS, Programs and community resources such as Family Resource Networks (FRNs), Lighthouse and Legislative Initiatives for the Elderly (LIFE), which are administered through the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Citizens, serves thousands of seniors daily throughout the state; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia: 

    That the West Virginia Legislature hereby urges the Governor of West Virginia to retain the one percent food tax to responsibly orchestrate funds to the senior citizen community; and, be it

    Further resolved: That the West Virginia Legislature urges the Governor to recognize that retainment of the one percent food tax is the responsible thing to do in order to meet the needs of seniors citizens and relieve pressure on the budget; and, be it

    Further resolved: That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Governor of West Virginia.
