HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 65

(By Delegates Perdue and Mr. Speaker, Mr. Thompson)

 

Requesting the Division of Highways to name a stretch of highway on County Route 41 from the mouth of Sweet Water Branch to Gourd Branch, in Wayne County, West Virginia, The “Perry Brothers Memorial Highway”.

    Whereas, Clarence, Raymond, Curtis, Clyde, Glen and James Perry are all sons of James and Jannievee Perry of Wilsondale, Wayne County, entered the navy and fought for their country in World War II and the Korean War; and

    Whereas, Clarence Perry was born May 24, 1918, fought and was wounded fighting against the Japanese in the Pacific Theater; and

    Whereas, Raymond Perry was born August 25, 1920, and served in the navy during World War II; and

    Whereas, Curtis Perry was born January 11, 1922, and served in the navy during World War II; and

    Whereas, Clyde Perry was born January 11, 1925, joined the navy and fought in the Pacific Theater against the Japanese; and

    Whereas, Glen Perry was born March 19, 1926, saw heavy action in the Pacific and was wounded when a Japanese plane attacked his ship, Glen received 21 battle stars by the age of 21; and

    Whereas, James Perry was born June 2, 1932 and served in the navy during the Korean War; and

    Whereas, All brothers returned home to lead productive lives in their communities; and

    Whereas, Raymond and Curtis Perry made the navy their career for the next 30 and 20 years respectively, Curtis as a Chief Petty Officer and Raymond as Commander- Head of Fleet Weather Facility in Florida; and

    Whereas, Clyde and Glen Perry returned home for a career in mining, Clyde Perry was a mine inspector and trained in mine and rescue recovery. Also, Clyde was a boxer and was ranked ninth in the eastern United States middle weight division. Glen Perry unfortunately passed away in a roof fall in 1958; and

    Whereas, Clarence and James Perry returned home as well. Clarence Perry was a CCC Worker, Marshall University Graduate, and minister. James Perry also attended Marshall University, where he received a teaching degree. He became a teacher and coach and was named “Coach of the Year”. Presently James is the only one of the six brothers living and resides in Fort Gay, Wayne County, West Virginia; and

    Whereas, It is fitting and proper, for their dedicated public service to their country, state and community, that this highway be named to memorialize the lives of the Perry brothers; therefore, be it

    Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

    That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name a stretch of highway on County Route 41 from the mouth of Sweet Water Branch to Gourd Branch, in Wayne County, the “Perry Brothers Memorial Highway”, and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed sign identifying the highway as the “Perry Brothers Memorial Highway”; and, be it

    Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and to Woodrow and James Perry.
