Fiscal Note Summary
Effect this measure will have on costs and revenues of state government.
The purpose of this bill is to provide free preventative cancer screening for professional firefighters. Cancer screening can incorporate a tremendous range of services. PEIA has reviewed existing claims data to identify current claim costs specifically for standard cancer screenings. This review indicates that the average screening cost per patient is $180. However, there are other cancer screenings marketed for firefighters that are not a covered service and have a range of costs from $900 to $2,500. Utilizing current claims data and assuming a 15% increase in utilization due to no cost sharing and a 10% increase in cost due to higher costs of other nonstandard International Association of Firefighter recommended screenings, PEIA estimates $56,000 in additional costs.
