House Honors Longtime Doorkeeper

CHARLESTON - Members of the House of Delegates today honored Chief Doorkeeper John A. Roberts, who after 30 years working for the Legislature is retiring at the close of regular session.

“John has served and protected members of the House of Delegates with great energy and loyalty, and his love of public service has been apparent,” House Speaker Rick Thompson said. “We owe him a deep debt of gratitude.”

As was noted in a resolution read on the House floor, Mr. Roberts got his start in politics and public service at age 12, when he paged in the U.S. House of Representatives while his uncle served as the elected Chief Doorkeeper from 1943 to 1947.

When his uncle, Ralph R. Roberts, was elected Clerk of the House of Representatives, John Roberts served as his assistant, and even filled in for his ailing uncle for a few months as Temporary Clerk at age 29.

He became Assistant Editor and later Editor of the U.S. Daily Digest, was Assistant Clerk to the District of Columbia Committee, then Legal Publications Specialist at the National Archives before retiring in 1982.

A resident of Hedgesville, Berkeley County, John Roberts came to work for the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1982, and eventually became an Assistant Doorkeeper. In 1996 he was elected Chief Doorkeeper, and was re-elected to that position for eight successive terms.

“This is the best job I’ve had in my entire life and I’ve enjoyed it more than any other,” Mr. Roberts said today.

During the floor session, Speaker Thompson presented Roberts with a medallion and a service pin.

“I know I speak for all 100 House members in wishing John a wonderful and relaxing retirement,” Speaker Thompson said.
