Mitch Carmichael

Senator Mike Azinger Named Chairman of Banking and Insurance Committee

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, has named Senator Mike Azinger, R-Wood, Chairman of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee. He replaces Senator Jeff Mullins, R-Raleigh, who recently resigned from the West Virginia Senate.

Senator Azinger, who was elected in 2016 to fill the unexpired term in the Third District, currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Interstate Cooperation Committee. He will continue to serve as Vice Chairman while assuming the duties of his new role. He also serves as a member of the Judiciary, Education, Health and Human Resources, Confirmations, Military, and Enrolled Bills committees.

“I’m thankful to have Senator Azinger step into this very important role for us,” Senate President Carmichael said. “This Committee is critical to ensuring that our state’s financial institutions and insurance providers continue to grow and thrive, and I think Mike will bring a strong, business friendly approach to its work.”

Senator Azinger will begin his duties immediately. Senator Charles Clements, R-Wetzel, will take over as the committee’s Vice Chairman.

“I’m honored that Senate President Carmichael is giving me this opportunity to serve the people of West Virginia with this Committee,” Senator Azinger said. “I am dedicated to making sure we continue to promote policies that will help families and businesses succeed, and I look forward to the great things we will accomplish this session.”
