Delegate Espinosa Statement on Racing Commission's Charles Town Classic Decision

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Delegate Paul Espinosa, R-Jefferson, today issued the following statement in response to the state Racing Commission’s rejection of funding for the Charles Town Classic.

“I’m disappointed in the commission’s action, which could jeopardize West Virginia’s premier race,” Delegate Espinosa said. “The Charles Town Classic has attracted the world’s best horses and international acclaim, and is an economic driver for our state and region. This race showcases the best West Virginia has to offer, and I’m saddened that they would take this action at a time when we’re working to promote more tourism in our state.

“I believe it is reasonable to expect that the West Virginia Racing Commission – the state regulatory body responsible for racing oversight – honor the negotiated agreement between the CTHBPA and management, that appears to be well within the industry norm, as is customary in other racing jurisdictions,” Delegate Espinosa said.

“I urge the commission to reconsider this decision.”
