Majority Leader applauds donation to Mountaineer Food Bank

CHARLESTON - House Majority Leader Brent Boggs said he was gratified to join representatives of the Mountaineer Food Bank and other community leaders as Walmart Superstore’s charitable Foundation presented a donation totaling more than $148,000 toward the effort to combat hunger.

“While the holidays certainly highlight need in our communities, we should all be mindful that hunger is a year-round problem,” Delegate Boggs noted. “There is nothing more basic than helping people in need – working together we can meet the needs of many, many hungry people.”

Mountaineer Food Bank provided 6.9 million pounds of food to hungry people last year and is on track to supply a total of 9 million pounds this year, according to Executive Director Carla Nardella.

On Tuesday at the Southridge Walmart Superstore, the Food Bank was presented a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s Associate Choice Program, an online campaign in which Walmart associates vote to choose grantees within their home states. The 10-week voting program awarded $5 million in grants to statewide organizations across the country, including $3.6 million to support hunger relief groups.

In addition, the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program provided a $98,500 grant toward the purchase of a new refrigerated truck to transport healthy food safely and quickly.

“We appreciate and thank all of the foundations, including the Walmart Foundation, and our individual donors,” Executive Director Nardella said. “It takes all of those little pieces to put the puzzle together and do what we do – and do it successfully.”

The refrigerated truck was unveiled at the event, which was also attended by Food Bank staff and a host of Walmart associates and managers. The remaining grant money, approximately $39,500, will be used for operating costs, Nardella said.

“This truck is a continual reminder of Walmart’s commitment to the people of West Virginia,” Boggs said. “I commend the company for its generosity and Mountaineer Food Bank for its tireless work.”
