Delegate Bonnie Brown

Delegate Brown Receives Civil Rights Award

CHARLESTON - Kanawha Delegate Bonnie Brown was honored by the West Virginia Human Rights Commission for “Advancing Civil Rights Through Advocacy” during a ceremony at the state Culture Center.

“It’s a huge honor for me to be recognized for my work in civil rights over the years,” Delegate Brown said.

Delegate Brown was among the 24 honored during the ceremony Tuesday.

The award, which is part of the Governor’s annual Civil Rights Day, recognizes “unsung” heroes throughout the state for humanitarian work within their communities for the betterment of all West Virginians.

Delegate Brown first became politically involved in the 1970s, working in the Women’s Rights Movement. She was a political organizer for the ERA for many states, as well as in Washington. Her work for women’s rights and civil rights led to her appointment as Chair of the South Charleston Human Rights Commission. She lobbied the state Legislature on those issues, including the Martin Luther King Holiday bill.

Delegate Brown was first elected to the House in 1982. She is currently chair of the Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee and serves on the Judiciary and Constitutional Revision committees. She also chairs the bi-partisan Women’s Caucus.

Recent awards include the Mountains of Gratitude Award from the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services; the Pace Setter Award from the Women in Legislatures Lobby; and the Roger Baldwin Award from the American Civil Liberties Union.

The WV Human Rights Commission Award, which has been provided to 177 people since its inception nearly a decade ago, was presented to Delegate Brown during the annual event, scheduled to coincide with national Black History Month.
