Delegate Yost Shadowed During Week Long Internship

Delegate Jack Yost (D-Brooke) was pleased to have a student, Nicholas Smith from West Virginia Wesleyan College, by his side for a week during the 2005 Regular Session. Mr. Smith, a senior from Follansbee, WV who is majoring in both Political Science and International Studies, took part in the Legislature’s Frasure-Singleton Internship.

Undergraduate students are selected to assist a specific senator or delegate for one week during the regular 60-day session. Participants are assigned to a legislator who assists in explaining the legislative process. They attend committee meetings and public hearings where legislation and issues are extensively discussed.

“Seeing first hand what I’ve learned about and read in books and learning nuances you don’t learn through anything but experience was an opportunity I could not miss and would recommend for any future student wishing to learn more about the legislative process,” said Smith. “The amount of time that not only the legislators spend dealing with their constituents, but also the time and effort put forth by constituents in trying to convey their feelings about issues really stood out to me. I look forward to using the knowledge I’ve gained here in future endeavors and wish it had lasted more than one week.”

These interns sit on the floor during daily sessions surrounded by legislators determining the fate of legislation. They also aid legislators with issue research, constituent requests and other legislative tasks.

“Nicholas has been an invaluable aid in my day to day work this week and has been a major asset during his internship,” said Delegate Yost. “I am pleased to have been able to take part in this internship because I believe that sharing this stage with the younger generation is the best way to ensure that our state has a bright future and in Nicholas, I can see that this state will be well taken care of down the road.” The Legislature offers several internship programs during the session.
