Delegate Yost Mentors Intern During Session, Appreciates Internship Program

Delegate Jack Yost (D-Brooke) was pleased to have a student, Makeda Shirley from the University of Charleston, working with him during the 2008 Regular Session. Ms. Shirley, a senior from Kingston, Jamaica is majoring in Mass Communication and Public Policy, and is taking part in the Legislature's Herndon Internship program.

Interns in the Herndon Internship program, one of several offered by the Legislature during the Regular Session, are required to perform research on legislation and various staff functions. The students are introduced over the session to an understanding of the politics of legislation, legislative research and research materials, bill drafting, the role and function of legislative committees, legislative rules, constituent services, and executive/legislative liaison and relationships.

"Seeing first hand what goes on in the legislature has been a wonderful experience and a tremendous opportunity to further my education. I've been learning nuances you don't learn through anything but experience and I would recommend this internship for any future student wishing to learn more about the legislative process," said Shirley.

"Delegate Yost has acted as a mentor for me during this session and I’ve acquired knowledge regarding the legislative process I otherwise would have never learned in any class or book. The amount of time that I’ve been able to spend with the legislators, and see how much work is put into each and every piece of legislation has opened my eyes and I truly feel that Delegate Yost wants the absolute best for his constituents. I look forward to using the knowledge I've gained here in future endeavors and am extremely honored to have been a part of this prestigious program."

Delegate Yost is very pleased to once again participate in the Legislature’s Internship program and is proud of the work the House has accomplished, with the help of Ms. Shirley.

"Makeda has been an invaluable aid in my day to day work this session and has been a major asset during her internship," said Delegate Yost. "I am pleased to have been able to take part in this internship because I believe that sharing this stage with the younger generations are the best way to ensure a bright future for the state and country."

The Legislature offers several internship programs during the session. For more information, interested parties should go to:
