Charleston, W.Va. - Senator Erik Wells, D-Kanawha, attended the opening of the non- profit school of Applied Behavior Learning Center--the second school of its kind in the state of West Virginia. “There is so much we know about autism and yet so little,” Senator Wells said. “What we know is individual instruction can make a difference one child at a time with this new school.”
Melena Scalise and Jimmie Jordan opened the school in Charleston’s West Side on August 13, 2009. The duo hopes to help autistic children adjust to a classic classroom environment starting with the simplest activities, attention, observance, and routine. The school is across the street from St. Anthony Catholic School that will accommodate interaction with other children to help significantly with autistic children.
“Attention to each child is very different and based on the requirements and needs of the student,” Wells said.
Currently the attendance cost is $2,000 a month that some medical insurances fund partially. The school however is accepting monetary donations to help cover supplies. |
