Mitch Carmichael

Carmichael Named Community Action Legislator of the Year

Charleston, WV - Carmichael Named Community Action Legislator of the Year Senate Majority Leader Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, of the 4th Senatorial District has been named Legislator of the Year by West Virginia Community Action Partnership, Inc., a non-profit organization comprised of 16 community action agencies across the state.

WVCAP and its affiliated members work in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity in an effort to improve West Virginia communities. The honor is bestowed annually upon a member of the legislature who demonstrates commitment to empowering low-income individuals and families and to eliminating the causes of poverty in West Virginia.

“We are dedicated to helping people help themselves and to changing lives by giving people a sense of hope, improving communities and making our state a better place to live,” WVCAP Executive Director Mary Chipps said. “We believe Mitch Carmichael embodies our mission and supports the notion that enabling West Virginian families to help themselves in order to sustain their lives is a key to fighting poverty.”

WVCAP said Carmichael is known for his energy and leadership in support of fairness of all people and dedication to the principle that job creation is most important to improving West Virginia communities, and that lending a helping hand to those who need to get and keep a job, is preferred to giving a handout.

“After school childcare programs, assisting with meeting local transportation needs, facilitating adult education services and even helping families with housing needs are all important to men and women getting and keeping the jobs they need, preserving their family unit and giving individuals hope and a sense of pride,” Senator Carmichael said. “To be honored by community action agencies that are on the front line of helping people across our great state means to me that the public service work I do is making a difference and we all need to feel that from time to time. This award is very gratifying, but the real heroes and heroines are community action workers across our state.”
