Senate President Cole Urges House of Delegates to Present Budget Plan With Suggested Cuts

CHARLESTON – Senate President Bill Cole, R-Mercer, issued the following statement today encouraging the House of Delegates to submit a proposal for balancing the budget without additional revenues:

"For weeks, the Senate has advocated for a balanced approach to solving this budget crisis. To that end, we have led on a proposal that combines a mix of additional revenue, substantive and ongoing cuts to the state’s budget, sweeping of executive agency slush funds and special revenue accounts, and as limited a dip as possible into the taxpayer’s savings account.

With the House of Delegates unwilling to adopt the additional revenue proposed by the Senate, we now stand ready and willing to receive their proposal for balancing the budget without additional revenues. We look forward to working with members of the House on the cuts proposed by our Senate Finance Committee, as well as those cuts suggested and vetted by the House Finance Committee, so we can complete our work on the people’s business and advance a reasonable budget that the Governor can sign."
