Timothy Miley

House Minority Leader to Give Back Special Session Pay to Taxpayers

Charleston, WV - During the 2017 Regular Session, House Democrat Minority Leader Tim Miley (D-Harrison) cosponsored House Bill 2981, a bill that would have limited, to five days, the number of days that members of the Legislature may receive daily compensation during an extraordinary, or “special,” session. After the 2017, 60 day regular session concluded earlier this year, legislators spent another 20 days in a special session to address the budget.

Consistent with his past practices and with the legislation he co-sponsored, Delegate Miley is giving his daily special session pay back to the taxpayers of West Virginia.

“For two years in a row, hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars have been unnecessarily spent on special budget sessions,” the Minority Leader stated. “Legislators stayed in Charleston for weeks- at the cost of $35,000 a day- without reaching any real consensus on how to address our state’s budget crisis.”

“Taxpayers are not to blame for the poor time-management of legislative matters, and they should not bear the cost of it,” Miley said. “That is why I am writing a check to the State Treasury to reimburse the taxpayers of West Virginia for this special session nonsense.”

“Our job is to pass a balanced, structurally sound budget that provides for efficient and effective operation of our state,” Miley stated. “Unfortunately, what was passed as the budget did not fix the ongoing problems we have as a state. I am afraid that we will be back in this same situation next spring,” he continued. “Legislators need to be held accountable by their constituents, who expect them to do the job that they are elected to do.”
