Senator Mark Maynard Encourages More Public Participation in Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee Meetings

CHARLESTON – The Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee met last week for its third meeting of the year to examine new or updated rules submitted by state agencies, boards, and commissions.

The Rule-Making Committee is comprised of six members of the Senate and six from the House of Delegates. These members are charged with reviewing each rule that is submitted for legislative approval. The Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee is Co-Chaired by Senator Mark Maynard, R-Wayne, and Delegate Kelli Sobonya, R-Cabell.

“Not many people may know a lot about the Legislative Rule-Making Review Committee and the importance it plays in state government,” Senator Maynard said. “This is the only committee that meets outside the regular sessions that actually takes action and votes on the rules before us. It is my hope to get the public more involved by commenting on rules they’re interested in, or following our committee when we meet.”

Agencies that are currently submitting rules are required to provide a window for the public to comment on those specific rules. The comment period for all rules currently being proposed has closed. However, any member of the public may attend the committee’s scheduled meetings and voice their concerns.

“As Co-Chair of this committee, I have made it a top priority to reach out to those who could be affected by proposed rules as much as possible,” Senator Maynard said. “I personally post the agendas, links to the rules, and all relevant information regarding the committee to social media so that the public can stay updated.”

If constituents are interested in the committee or seeing proposed rules on the committee’s agenda they can visit the committee online or follow along on Facebook . The Legislative Rule-Making Committee will reconvene starting December 6, 2017, where they will consider approximately 45 submitted rules.
