Senate President Mitch Carmichael Praises Governor for Broad Special Session Call

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, praised Governor Jim Justice for the broad nature of his call for the Legislature to convene in an Extraordinary Session to focus on improving West Virginia’s public education system.

“The people of West Virginia are fortunate to have a Governor who understands that the time to put our energy and our focus into making West Virginia’s school systems even better is right now. His call into a special session will give all 134 members of the Legislature the time they need outside of the day-to-day pressures of the Regular Session to be in their communities meeting face to face with the people who will be most affected by these issues – parents, students, teachers, and administrators. Because the call is broad, it will enable us to look not just at previous measures we’ve considered, but also study ways to create efficiencies and eliminate obsolete provisions in the scope of West Virginia School Laws,” Senate President Carmichael said.

“I thank Governor Justice for ensuring we have the ability to spend time with our outstanding, hard-working teachers and the families they serve to learn about their needs and let those conversations guide us as we work on our improvement plans. I look forward to working closely with all people whose priority is creating a world-class education system right here in West Virginia.”
