House Majority Leader Praises Glenville State College’s Contribution

CHARLESTON – In response to a recent legislative audit that questions the number of four-year colleges in West Virginia, House Majority Leader Brent Boggs said he feels compelled to point out the ongoing success and positive impact of Glenville State College has in its region.

“Despite the recent tight economic conditions, Glenville State College continues to increase enrollment by exploring new programs and meeting the workforce needs in rural central West Virginia,” Boggs said. “The college is meeting the provisions laid out in the Governor’s State of the State address by providing access to higher education for children in these rural areas.”

The Braxton County delegate said he wants to ensure that legislative audit of the Higher Education Policy Commission and the Council for Community and Technical College Education did not paint Glenville State College is not misinterpreted.

“West Virginia has a number of unique geographic and economic factors that make comparison with other states often misleading,” Boggs said. “Glenville State College is centrally located with no other four-year college or university located with approximately 60 miles of its campus.

“It also provides educational opportunities to many first-generation students who would not otherwise be able to seek a degree.”

In a letter to the state Office of Performance Evaluation and Review, Boggs notes Glenville State’s partnership with the state Division of Corrections, Regional Jail Authority and Division of Juvenile Services to provide comprehensive correctional officer training, among several other valuable programs.

“I appreciate the leadership of President Peter Barr, the GSC Board of Governors and the dedicated faculty, staff, students and alumnus that continue to grow and move the institution forward,” he stated.
