Senator Ready to Get to Work on Marcellus Shale Committee

CHARLESTON, WV – Senator Douglas Facemire (D - Braxton) says he is ready to begin work on addressing the issue of Marcellus Shale regulation.

Senator Facemire was appointed chair of the Senate’s five select committee members last week by Acting Senate President Jeff Kessler. The select committee was authorized by the Joint Committee of Government and Finance during June interim meetings.

“I am proud to serve on this very important committee and look forward to working closely with my colleagues in moving this issue forward,” says Facemire. “Developing our State’s natural gas reserves will not only create economic development opportunities in West Virginia, but will also play a huge role in helping the country become energy independent.”

The select interim committee is made up of five Senate and five House members.

“Every member of the select committee brings viable knowledge and experience,” says Facemire. “I expect the committee to move quickly on this issue and am hopeful legislation can be put forth and passed during a special legislative session later this year.”

Senator Facemire says in proposing legislation, the select committee will take into consideration the importance of the State’s energy future, the environmental impact of drilling in the Marcellus Shale as well as the protection of property owners’ rights.
