Delegate Don Perdue

House Health Chairman Given Leadership Position in National Legislative Advocacy Group

House Health Chairman Don Perdue has been appointed to serve as Co-Chairman of the National Conference of State Legislatures' (NCSL) Health Committee, one of 10 committees that deal with both state and state-federal issues.

"NCSL has benefitted from Delegate Perdue’s expertise over the years," said NCSL's President and New Hampshire Representative Teri Norelli. "His participation will continue to ensure that the states' agenda is carried out in Washington."

NCSL is nationally recognized as a formidable lobbying force representing states' interests before Congress, the White House, and federal agencies. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.

NCSL standing committees are composed of legislators and legislative staff who are appointed by the leadership of their respective legislatures.

The Health Committee works to educate Congress and federal agencies about state concerns regarding developments in federal health initiatives and programs and grants to states. It serves as a forum for legislators and legislative staff to learn about and share information regarding health programs and health policy initiatives in other states.

For the first time in NCSL’s history, the chairs will serve two-year, rather than one-year, terms.

In the past few years, this committee has studied and worked on issues such as Medicare prescription drug coverage, Medicaid, health care cost containment and access, and public health and prevention – all issues that the House Health Committee is dealing with here in West Virginia, Perdue noted.

“I am honored to help lead the NCSL Health Committee in advocating for states and to continue to bring invaluable information back home,” he said. “Being able to bring state concerns to the steps of our Nation's Capitol is integral to any success we may enjoy with the terrific challenge providing Healthcare to our citizens represents.

“Good policy commands that every state's concerns are fairly represented. I look forward to this opportunity and pray I may live up to its promise.”
