Senator Yoder Invites Area Students to Participate in Page Program

West Virginia state Senator John Yoder (R-Jefferson) announces he would be more than happy to sponsor students from his district, representing Jefferson and Berkeley Counties, who wish to participate in the West Virginia Legislature’s Page Program. The Page Program offers a unique opportunity for young citizens of West Virginia to participate in the Legislative process during the 60-day Regular Session.

To become a page, a student must be sponsored by a member of either the Senate or the House of Delegates, and the age limits are 11 years or older in the Senate and no less than 5th Grade in the House. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the Capitol City.

Once accepted to the program, the page performs several different duties designed to assist the members of the Senate and the House during their floor sessions. The errands include retrieving information from the Clerk’s desk or passing information between various lawmakers.

“Involving our youngest citizens in the legislative process at these early ages can be extremely beneficial to the future of this great state,” said Yoder. “I am extremely proud to be able to offer this opportunity to include the young students of my area in this rare glimpse inside the chambers of this legislative body.”

This opportunity provides students with rare floor privileges, as no one except lawmakers and their staff are allowed access to the floors of the chambers when legislators are performing their official duties. This allows students the ability to witness the legislative process from eye level and get an up close feel for “how a bill becomes law.”

“I encourage all interested students from my district to include themselves in this program because of the wonderful learning experience it provides,” said Yoder. “Contact my office here in Charleston at (304) 357-7957 and I would be happy to sponsor students.”
