Bugler Visits House for Solemn Demonstration

The West Virginia House of Delegates welcomed Jack Woodrum on Friday, February 18, the 10th day of the Legislative Session to sound Taps as the session adjourned.

Woodrum’s playing of Taps on his trumpet was a stirring acknowledgement of House Bill 2286, which unanimously passed the House Friday morning. Members of the House and guests present in the House Chambers rose to respectfully pay tribute to former legislators who have served in the Chamber during its history.

The Bill serves as a respectful tribute to those who have served in the armed forces and the families who have shared in that sacrifice. By acknowledging that it can be difficult to arrange a bugler to sound final taps in a military honors funeral, the bill hopes to encourage capable young people to play Taps at funerals honoring our veterans. This will help them develop a better understanding and respect for the commitment of those fine veterans and an appreciation of the privileges they enjoy because of the service of the men and women of the armed services.

The State Board would collaborate with schools and veterans organizations to distribute information to advocate parental consent for any student in grades six through 12 capable of playing Taps to voluntarily place his or her name on a registry. Students will also be awarded credit for community service or work based learning requirements.

Members of the House of Delegates who represent the 27th District join Woodrum’s at the close of the daily session. Pictured are Del. Linda Sumner, (R-Raleigh), House Speaker Robert Kiss, (D-Raleigh), Del. Virginia Mahan, (D-Summers), Del. Gerald Crosier, (D-Monroe), Del. Sally Susman, (D-Raleigh) and Del. Ron Thompson, (D-Raleigh).
