House Redistricting Committee meets next week, has new web page

CHARLESTON – House Majority Leader Brent Boggs said the House’s redistricting web page is up and running, and the House Select Committee on Redistricting is scheduled to meet next week during the Legislature’s monthly interim meetings.

“As committee members gather to organize, receive statistical information and consult with state experts on the redistricting process, the House Redistricting Committee web page will give members of the public a new way to provide feedback, either electronically or by seeking out contact information for delegates,” said Boggs, who is chairing the Select Committee. “I think people will find the site very user friendly.”

The link to the House Redistricting Committee web page can be found under the House tab on the Legislature’s main web page, www.legis.state.wv.us. There is also a link on the Legislature’s main Redistricting page.

“We want to provide citizens with as much information as possible about the process of redrawing the boundaries of the West Virginia delegate districts,” Boggs said. “The site provides ways to look up current individual delegate districts and contact those delegates, examine the U.S. Census figures, and view a breakdown of the regions each the delegates on the 30-member House Redistricting Committee cover.”

General comments can be emailed to the Redistricting Committee – house.redistricting@wvhouse.gov – and there will soon be a form that can be filled out to send a message regarding a specific district. In addition, the regional map featured on the site provides a way to directly e-mail each of the members within a region. A new, designated toll-free phone line should be in place within days. In the meantime, a message line can be called via the Legislature’s existing main toll-free number, 877-565-3447 (extension 3285).

The House Select Committee on Redistricting will meet at noon on Tuesday, June 14, in the House of Delegates Chamber. The meeting, which will be broadcast live via the web site, will include presentations by the Secretary of State’s Office, the West Virginia County Clerk's Association and the Legislative Manager’s Office.

House Redistricting Committee Vice Chairman Mike Caputo said the meeting was planned to coincide with the Legislature’s monthly interim session so that all members could attend.

“As we’ve said before, we envision this as a process that takes place and the local level, and all House members are working to help ensure the wishes of each local community are considered,” Caputo said. “We will also urge members to encourage constituents to use our new web site or call our committee phone line and provide input.”
