Public Input on Marcellus Legislation Sought

CHARLESTON – The House of Delegates members of the Legislature’s Joint Select Committee on Marcellus Shale plan to hold three public hearings in the region of the state where shale drilling is taking place to seek input from all interested parties.

"The committee members have heard much about both the potential benefits and problems associated with the Marcellus Shale development - what we are now looking for are suggestions on measures that should be included in a new state law that encourages efficient development of the resource while addresses local and environmental concerns," House Chair Tim Manchin, D-Marion, said.

All members of the public are invited to attend the hearings, which will be held in Wheeling on July 21, Morgantown on July 25 and Clarksburg on July 27. The exact time and location of the meetings, which will take place in the evening, will be announced early next week.

The select committee is using as a starting point Senate legislation that was under consideration in the House at the end of the regular session. A copy of that legislation, along with summaries prepared by a committee attorney, will be made available on the Legislature’s main web page at www.legis.state.wv.us prior to the first hearing.
