Senators Beach and Plymale Appointed to Blue Ribbon Highway Committee

CHARLESTON, WV - Senate President Jeff Kessler (D - Marshall) announced today he has appointed Senators Robert Beach (D-Monongalia) and Robert Plymale (D-Wayne) to the newly announced Blue Ribbon Highway Commission.

Governor Tomblin announced the formation of the Blue Ribbon Highway Commission earlier today. It is charged with developing potential transportation funding measures and reporting back to the Governor and the Legislature prior to the 2013 Legislative Session.

Senator Beach, who is Chairman of the Transportation Committee, says the time frame is short but he is optimistic the Commission will complete its task. “It is crucial that we move forward with finding a solid, secure measure to fund West Virginia’s extensive network of roads, highways and bridges. Our citizens deserve a highway system that improves the safety of drivers and passengers.”

Senator Robert Plymale, who works for the Nick J. Rahall, II Appalachian Transportation Institute (RTI) says he looks forward to begin assessing the long term needs of the State’s highway system. “The West Virginia Department of Highways is responsible for maintaining the 6th largest highway system in the country; however, it is evident through unfinished highway projects that funding for West Virginia highways has not kept pace with its needs.”

Senators Beach and Plymale are serving as non-voting members of the Commission.
