A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §29-1-15, relating to authorizing the Director of Security and security officers who are employed by the Division of Culture and History to carry a firearm or concealed weapon upon the West Virginia State Capitol Complex and State Property.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:


That the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, be amended by adding thereto a new section, designated §29-1-15, to read as follows:

ARTICLE 1. DIVISION OF CULTURE AND HISTORY.


§29-1-15. Director of Security and security officers at the Division of Culture and History authority to carry concealed weapon.


Notwithstanding any provision of this code to the contrary, the commissioner may permit the Director of Security and security officers of the division in his or her employ to carry a firearm in the course of performing their official duties: Provided, That as a precondition of being authorized to carry a firearm or concealed weapon in the course of his or her official duties, any designated officer must have successfully completed a firearms training and certification program and maintain certification in a manner which is equivalent to that required of members of the State Police and obtain and maintain a license to carry a concealed deadly weapon issued pursuant to article seven, chapter sixty-one of this code.

 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to authorize the Director of Security and security officers who are employed by the Division of Culture and History to carry a firearm or concealed weapon upon the West Virginia State Capitol Complex and state property for the security and protection of visitors and employees of the Division of Culture and History.
