A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new article, designated §9A-5-1, relating to granting members of a Gold Star Family a 100 percent tuition waiver to attend any West Virginia state college, university, community and technical college, education institution, vocational school and approved apprenticeship program; and providing that the waiver funds may be used for other expenses if certain conditions are met.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:


ARTICLE 5. GOLD STAR Tuition waivers.


§9A-5-1. Tuition waivers for Gold Star Families.

(a) The parents, siblings, children, and the nieces and nephews of fallen service members who did not have children of a Gold Star Family shall receive a 100 percent tuition waiver to attend any West Virginia state college, university, community and technical college, education institution, vocational school and approved apprenticeship program. If the individual receives any additional grants, funds or waivers from those institutions or programs, the federal government, or state provides, the waiver funds may be used to cover any additional administrative fees associated with attending those institutions or programs, including housing, books, parking and fees of any type.

(b) For the purposes of this section, “Gold Star Family” is the immediate family member(s) of a fallen service member who died while serving in a time of conflict.


 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to grant members of a Gold Star Family a 100 percent tuition waiver to attend any West Virginia state college, university, community and technical college, education institution, vocational school and approved apprenticeship program. The bill provides that the waiver funds may be used for other expenses if certain conditions are met.
