Requesting the Division of Highways name a portion of Route 92, beginning at point 38.359565, -79.880861 and ending at point 38.163267, -79.980827, in Pocahontas County, the "Dr. Roland P. Sharp Memorial Road".

Whereas, Roland P. Sharp was born in 1907 on a small farm in Frost, West Virginia. He later taught in one-room schoolhouses in this area in order to earn money to go to medical school; and

Whereas, Roland P. Sharp received a bachelor’s degree from Concord State Normal School (now Concord University), a master’s degree from West Virginia University, and his doctor of osteopathy degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (now A.T. Still University) in Missouri; and

Whereas, Dr. Roland P. Sharp received multiple awards for his work and was a driving force behind the founding of the Greenbrier School of Osteopathic Medicine, forerunner of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine; and

Whereas, Dr. Roland P. Sharp practiced as a coal company doctor in West Virginia, serving mining families. At the age of 55, he returned to Pocahontas County and worked in his own practice until he was 93 years old; and

Whereas, Dr. Roland P. Sharp passed away in July 2013 at the age of 105;

Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate Dr. Roland P. Sharp and his contributions to our state and country; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name a portion of Route 92, beginning at point 38.359565, -79.880861 and ending at point 38.163267, -79.980827, in Pocahontas County, the "Dr. Roland P. Sharp Memorial Road"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs at both ends identifying the portion of road as the "Dr. Roland P. Sharp Memorial Road"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
