SENATE RESOLUTION 6

(By Senators Oliverio, Caputo, Maroney, Clements, Smith, Taylor, Stuart, Trump, Deeds, Swope, Nelson, Martin, Grady, Phillips, Barrett, Queen, Hamilton, Roberts, and Plymale)

Congratulating Bob Huggins on his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Whereas, Robert Edward Huggins was born September 21, 1953, in Morgantown, West Virginia, the son of the late Charlie and Norma Huggins; and

Whereas, Bob Huggins’ legendary coaching career began as a graduate assistant at West Virginia University in 1977, under head coach Joedy Gardner; and

Whereas, In 1980, Bob Huggins accepted his first job as a head coach at Walsh College, where he compiled a 71-26 record in three seasons, including a perfect 30-0 regular season in 1982-1983; and

Whereas, After one year as an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida, Bob Huggins was named head coach at Akron University, where he lead the Zips to a 97-46 record and reached post-season play in three of his five seasons at Akron, including an NCAA bid in 1985–1986 season; and

Whereas, Bob Huggins was named head coach at the University of Cincinnati in 1989, and restored the Bearcats rich history with a 399-127 record over 16 seasons.  During his tenure, Coach Huggins lead the Bearcats to 10 conference regular-season titles and eight league tournament titles. The Bearcats appeared in post-season play in each of Huggins' 16 seasons, including the 1992 Final Four. They advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament two other times, in 1993 and 1996; and

Whereas, Bob Huggins, while at Cincinnati, earned the Ray Meyer Award as the Conference USA Coach of the Year a record three times (1997–1998, 1998–1999, and 1999–2000), and was a unanimous choice for C-USA Coach of the Decade. He was selected national coach of the year by ESPN.com in 2001–2002. His teams won five consecutive conference tournament titles—all four Great Midwest Conference titles from 1992 to 1995 and the first Conference USA men's basketball tournament in 1996. He was named co-national coach of the year by The Sporting News and was Basketball Times' national coach of the year in 1997–1998. He earned national coach of the year recognition from Hoop Scoop in 1991–1992; and

Whereas, Bob Huggins spent one season as head coach of Kansas State, leading the Wildcats to a 23-12 overall record; and

Whereas, On April 5, 2007, Bob Huggins returned home to West Virginia and was named head coach at his alma mater, West Virginia University, where he has lead them to a Big East Conference Tournament Championship (2010), the school’s second ever Final Four Appearance (2010), and four Sweet 16 appearances; and

Whereas, Bob Huggins has guided the Mountaineers to more than 325 victories, making him the second coach (Roy Williams) in NCAA basketball history to win more than 300 games at two different schools; and

Whereas, With more than 925 wins Bob Huggins has the second most wins among active coaches (Jim Boeheim) and is the third most winningest coach in NCAA basketball history (Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim); and

Whereas, Bob Huggins was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022, cementing his place among the all-time greats in basketball history; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate hereby congratulates Bob Huggins on his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate commends native son Bob Huggins for his legendary coaching career and extends its most sincere gratitude to him for his commitment and dedication to West Virginia University and the State of West Virginia; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate is most grateful to Bob Huggins for establishing the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Endowment at the WVU Cancer Institute, which supports patient care and clinical cancer research that targets many types of the disease that are common among residents of the Mountain State. With Coach Huggins leading the charge, over $17 million has been raised; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Senate extends its appreciation to Bob Huggins for recognizing the hard and dangerous work of miners throughout West Virginia and for supporting miners and their families through the tragedies that occurred at the Sago and Upper Big Branch mines; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Bob Huggins.
