Statement from Senate President Mitch Carmichael Regarding Moody’s Report on Road Bond Debt:

“I am so encouraged that a prestigious rating agency, Moody’s, has affirmed what we believed: Infrastructure is a key to unlocking economic development and tremendous opportunity. West Virginia, under the leadership of its Republican-led Legislature and Republican governor, boldly chose to tackle the issue of crumbling infrastructure. We were handed this crisis by years of previous leadership ignoring the problem. We fought against the national trend of persistently delaying infrastructure needs, and the rating agencies have taken note by giving our state positive commentary. West Virginia took action to responsibly ensure the funding for these critical upgrades would already be in place, and in doing so, created a way for West Virginia to take care of its road and bridge maintenance needs without hurting our good credit rating. I am grateful Moody’s sees the potential through these bonds for better roads and more jobs, and I’m confident our financial outlook will continue to improve.”
