Mitch Carmichael

Statement from Senate President Mitch Carmichael on Education Legislation for the Upcoming Special Session of the Legislature

“I am pleased that Senate Democrats have finally offered ideas and submitted bills which they have prepared for a special session on education. I am especially pleased that most of these ideas are components of our original comprehensive education reform effort that they opposed during the Regular Session. It has often been said that the sincerest form of flattery is imitation. I look forward to their support as we implement many of these ideas as part of our approach to improving student success in West Virginia.

There is no question that we must address the evolving social and emotional needs of our students. I am confident that, working together, we can address these problems while providing school choice options for parents and students. The desire to provide West Virginia’s families with additional educational options is a choice to improve and inspire our students to higher achievement and full potential. I believe there is room in West Virginia to encourage and support traditional public schools as well as to provide alternatives for the precious children of West Virginia – the ones who matter most in this process – to pursue the best educational outcomes for their circumstances.

We continue to work on developing education bills that will place the success of our students front and center, give teachers the freedom to do their jobs without unneeded interference, and provide schools with the resources they need to deal with our changing societal challenges. We cannot allow our state's children to continue to be held hostage by a system that has continued to fail them.”
