Clements Appointed to Fill Second District Vacancy

CHARLESTON – Governor Jim Justice has selected former House of Delegates member Charles Clements of Wetzel County to fill the vacancy in the Second Senatorial District.

Clements replaces Senator Kent Leonhardt, R-Monongalia, who began serving as the West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture on January 16. The Second Senatorial District includes Wetzel, Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie, and Calhoun counties, and parts of Marshall, Monongalia, Marion, and Gilmer counties.

Clements is the executive director of the West Virginia Route 2 and Interstate 68 Authority. He owned and operated Clements Oil Company in New Martinsville until 2004. Additionally, he served as a member of the New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission, the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Highways, and as past president of the New Martinsville Rotary Club. He also served in the United States Army.

“I’m thrilled to welcome a person with the skills and background that Charles has to the West Virginia Senate, and I look forward to the ideas his experience will bring,” Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, said. “He has served our state in many roles throughout the years, and I am proud to have him serving as our newest Senator.”
