Senate President Mitch Carmichael Praises President Trump’s Nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to Supreme Court of the United States

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, today praised President Donald Trump for his nomination of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy.

Judge Kavanaugh has served for more than 10 years as a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Prior to his confirmation in 2006, he had broad experience in both private practice and government service, including service as Senior Associate White House Counsel and Staff Secretary to President George W. Bush.

“This selection underscores President Trump’s commitment to appointing strong, conservative judges who believe their purpose is to faithfully interpret the law, not attempt to legislate from the bench,” Senate President Carmichael said. “We are blessed to have a President who understands the critical role the judiciary has in shaping the direction of a country.”

Kavanaugh has more than 300 published opinions and has overruled federal agency action 75 times, including in three cases that could have had potentially devastating consequences on West Virginia’s coal industry.

“President Trump promised that he would select proven, tried-and-true judges with a deep respect for the rule of law, who would be faithful to the Constitution of the United States. He has kept his promise. West Virginia can’t afford a no vote on Judge Kavanaugh. I hope Senator Manchin will put party politics aside and join Senator Capito in moving quickly to confirm President Trump’s great nominee.”
