Senate Democrats to Hold Listening Tour on Education

Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Senate Democrats announced dates for a listening tour in their districts. This tour, “Keep the Promise: Civil Dialogue Regarding Public Education in West Virginia,” has been designed in response to Governor’s Justice call for a special legislative session focusing on “educational betterment.”

“Education affects everyone, so we want to hear from everyone—students, parents, teachers, local businesses, service personnel, grandparents, and community leaders,” said Senator Stephen Baldwin (D- Greenbrier). “We plan to listen at these events--listen actively and intently to your ideas for enhancing education. That didn't happen with the omnibus education bill, so we want to set a new tone where everyone has a seat at the table."

“‘Keeping the Promise’ refers not only to the pay raise promised by the Governor and Senate leadership to teachers and service personnel before the election, but also to the constitutional mandate of the state to provide a thorough and efficient public education,” said Senator Paul Hardesty (D- Logan). “It’s something we’re united behind as a caucus.”

Meetings will follow a more or less town hall format, with the public being given a chance to share their ideas and input and elected officials primarily listening.

Meetings have been set for the following dates:

March 19 at 6 PM
Eastern Greenbrier Middle School in Fairlea, Greenbrier County

March 20 at 6 PM
Oak Hill High School Media Center in Oak Hill, Fayette County

March 26 at 6 PM

March 26 at 6 PM
Brooke High School in Wellsburg, Brooke County

April 2 at 6 PM

April 3 at 6 PM
Millsop Community Center in Weirton, Hancock County

April 4 at 6 PM
Logan High School Little Theater, Logan County

April 10 at 6 PM
