FOR

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 30

Originating in the Committee on Roads and Transportation

 

Requesting the Division of Highways to name the bridge carrying County Route 11 over the Buckhannon River in Upshur County, bridge number 49-11-17.13 (49A032), latitude 38.78276, longitude -80.22227, locally known as the Alexander Larch bridge, the "U.S. Army PFC Everett Henry Woody Memorial Bridge".

Whereas, Everett Henry Woody was born on August 20, 1931, in Upshur County, being the second of eight children born unto Archie Woody and Nellie Bennett Woody; he was affectionately known by his family as “Hen”; and

            Whereas, Everett Henry Woody attended Upshur County schools; and

Whereas, U. S. Army PFC Everett Henry Woody joined the U. S. Army and was a member of Company C, 21st Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division; and

Whereas, PFC Everett Henry Woody was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea by mortar fire on July 1, 1953; and

            Whereas, , PFC Everett Henry Woody is survived by all of his siblings who still miss and remember him to this day; they are: Wayman Woody, of Tucson, Arizona, Mamie Starkey,  Charles Woody, Dottie Shaw and Gae Johnston, all of Buckhannon, West Virginia, Mary Meivogel, of Madison, Ohio and Sue Zoeffel, of Ocala, Florida; and

Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate the service of PFC Everett Henry Woody to his community, his country and his family, by making the ultimate sacrifice; therefore, be it

            Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

            That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways to name the bridge carrying County Route 11 over the Buckhannon River in Upshur County, bridge number 49-11-17.13 (49A032), latitude 38.78276, longitude -80.22227, locally known as the Alexander Larch bridge, the "U.S. Army PFC Everett Henry Woody Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

            Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the twin bridges, both northbound and southbound, as the “U.S. Army PFC Everett Henry Woody Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

            Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and to Larry W. Brown, Commander, VFW Post 3663, Buckhannon, West Virginia.
