HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 32

(By Delegates Jeffries, Burkhammer, Coop-Gonzalez, Riley, Smith, and Mallow)

[Introduced on January 17, 2024; Referred to the Committee on Technology and Infrastructure then Rules]

 

Requesting the Division of Highways name Bridge Number 44-079/00-029.04 (NB) (44A125), at 38.58216 latitude and -81.21047 longitude and originally known as the Big Sandy Creek N (CSPG) at CR29 & Big Sandy Creek, near Amma, WV in Roane County, the "Sloan Brothers Memorial Bridge."

Whereas, Adrian LaVaughan Brewster, Jack Alton Sloan, James H. Sloan, Lawrence E. Sloan, and Loval C. Sloan all lived lives of distinction worthy of being remembered; and

Whereas, Adrian LaVaughan Brewster, a native of Jackson County, was a veteran of a nuclear submarine station in the United States Navy and also went on to graduate from Woodmont High School in Piedmont and Cortland College in New York and teach in the science field for almost two decades; and

Whereas, Jack Alton Sloan of Clendenin was an avid hunter, fisherman, a mechanic for Kanawha County Parks and Recreation, and a disabled veteran who served courageously and honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War; and

Whereas, James H. Sloan, a native of St. Albans, was a lover of hunting, fishing, and playing cards as well as having retired as an employee of Shawnee Hills and having served honorably and courageously in Germany for the United States Army; and

Whereas, Lawrence E. Sloan was a native of Clendenin, a World War II Navy Veteran, and a member of both American Legion Post 61 of Clendenin and VFW Post 8516; and

Whereas, Loval C. Sloan, a native of Clendenin, was a Korean War Veteran, a member of the Hurricane Baptist Church, and a retired employee of Columbia Gas; and

Whereas, the combined effect this group had on West Virginia, their service to their country, and their memorable lives have made them worthy of respect and remembrance from the State of West Virginia; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name Bridge Number 44-079/00-029.04 (NB) (44A125), at 38.58216 latitude and -81.21047 longitude and originally known as the Big Sandy Creek N (CSPG) at CR29 & Big Sandy Creek, near Amma, WV in Roane County, the "Sloan Brothers Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to erect signs containing bold and prominent letters identifying the bridge as the "Sloan Brothers Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
