HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 18

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the State of West
Virginia, repealing sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, article VI
thereof, and amending section 2 of said article, all relating
to creating one hundred single delegate districts, each
comprised of one delegate, and thirty four senatorial
districts, each comprised of one senator; numbering and
designating such proposed amendment; and providing a
summarized statement of the purpose of such proposed
amendment.
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia, two thirds of
the members elected to each house agreeing thereto:
That the question of ratification or rejection of an amendment
to the Constitution of the State of West Virginia be submitted to
the voters of the State at the next general election to be held in the year two thousand six, which proposed amendment is that
sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, article VI thereof be repealed, and
section 2 of said article be amended, all to read as follows:
ARTICLE VI.
§2. Composition of Senate and House of Delegates; division into
districts.
The Senate shall be composed of
twenty-four thirty-four, and
the House of Delegates of
sixty-five one hundred members, subject
to be increased according to the provisions hereinafter contained.
The state shall be divided into thirty-four senatorial districts,
each represented by a single senator. The state shall also be
divided into one hundred House of Delegate districts, each
represented by a single delegate. Upon implementation of this
section, the senatorial and delegate districts shall be arranged
according to the provisions of section ten of this article. During
the first election after implementation of this section, the
provisions of section three of this article apply.
NOTE: The purpose of this Resolution is to amend the
Constitution to provide for single senatorial and delegate
districts, and for the Senate to be comprised of thirty-four
members and the House of Delegates to be comprised of one hundred
members.
