Requesting the Division of Highways name County Route 20/Spring Creek Station Road, located between 37° 56' 43.9866", -80° 22' 35.2122" and 37° 59' 28.6938", -80° 21' 49.9062" in Greenbrier County, the "U.S. Army Private Clarence William 'Buck' Holliday Memorial Road".

Whereas, Clarence William "Buck" Holliday was born in Spring Creek in Greenbrier County on August 30, 1923. He was the seventh of nine children born to Clarence and Cora Holliday; and

Whereas, Buck Holliday entered the United States Army on April 18, 1944, and completed his Basic Training at Fort Blanding, Florida; and

Whereas, Private Holliday was deployed to the European Theater as part of the 104th Infantry Division, leaving the United States on October 5, 1944, and landing in Scotland on October 13, 1944; and

Whereas, He traveled through Scotland, England, and France, arriving in Belgium on November 5, 1944, where the fighting was fierce; and

Whereas, As a member of the 104th Infantry Division, Private Holliday was likely involved in the battles of Hurtgen Forest, which took place from September through December of 1944; and

Whereas, on November 23, 1944, Thanksgiving Day, at 21 years of age, Private Holliday was shot down by German machine gun fire. He is buried in the Staunton National Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia; and

Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate U.S. Army Private Clarence William “Buck” Holliday and his contributions to our state and country; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name County Route 20/Spring Creek Station Road, located between 37° 56' 43.9866", -80° 22' 35.2122" and 37° 59' 28.6938", -80° 21' 49.9062" in Greenbrier County, the "U.S. Army Private Clarence William 'Buck' Holliday Memorial Road"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs at both ends identifying the road as the "U.S. Army Private Clarence William 'Buck' Holliday Memorial Road"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
