WESTON, W.Va. – Delegate Patrick Martin, R-Lewis, said he has been in contact with state officials and anticipates a swift response to today’s flooding that has affected north-central West Virginia.
“I’ve spoken with Mike Hall, chief of staff for Governor Jim Justice, and we anticipate a state of emergency declaration soon that will bring the full resources of our government to bear to respond to this devastating flooding,” Delegate Martin said.
“Response teams are currently preparing to aid in cleanup efforts, and agency officials will begin helping residents recover as soon as the waters recede,” Delegate Martin said. “Meanwhile, I want to thank our first responders who are currently out helping residents as they combat the high waters.”
The flooding has closed Interstate 79 at Jane Lew, and several other roads in the area are under water as well. Delegate Martin reminded motorists to avoid driving or walking through flooded roadways.
“It’s never safe to drive or walk across flood waters,” Delegate Martin said. “Even if it looks like there’s just a small amount of standing water, you never know how deep it runs or if the roadway underneath has been washed away. According to the National Weather Service, it takes just 6 inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult. For motorists, it only takes 12 inches of rushing water to carry off a small car, while 2 feet will carry off most other vehicles. I strongly urge residents to avoid these flood waters at all costs.”
