Senate President Mitch Carmichael Names Senator Tom Takubo Majority Leader for 84th Legislature

CHARLESTON – Senate President Mitch Carmichael, R-Jackson, today announced that Senator Tom Takubo, R-Kanawha, has been named Senate Majority Leader for the 84th Legislature, which begins January 9, 2019.

Senator Takubo, who was elected to his first term in 2014, currently serves as the Chairman of the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee. He is also a member of the Economic Development, Finance, Government Organization, and Natural Resources committees.

“I’m thrilled that Senator Takubo has agreed to step into this critical role in our Senate leadership team,” Senate President Carmichael said. “Tom is greatly respected by both Republican and Democrat members. He has a strong understanding of what we need to do to continue moving West Virginia in the right direction.”

Senator Takubo is a graduate of Marshall University and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at West Virginia University and completed a fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at East Tennessee State University. A practicing physician, he splits time between Charleston-area hospitals and his private practice, Pulmonary Associates of Charleston.

“I’m honored that Senate President Carmichael has put his trust in me to lead the members of our caucus both on and off the Senate floor,” Senator Takubo said. “Our state has come a long way in a short time, but now is not the time to let up. We must be relentless in our pursuit to make West Virginia a great place for families and businesses. I’m eager to get started on building our legislative agenda and hitting the ground running.”
