Speaker Hanshaw Statement on Day of Mourning for President George H.W. Bush

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay, today issued the following statement on the statewide observance of the National Day of Mourning for late President George H.W. Bush.

“President George H.W. Bush was one of the few remaining heroes of America’s Greatest Generation – a nation of ordinary men and women who sacrificed and gave greatly of themselves to make an extraordinary and lasting impact on history,” Speaker Hanshaw said. “We mourn the passing of this humble patriot who served our country with kindness and grace.

“We join Governor Justice in his belief that we need to pause and appropriately recognize and reflect on the loss of such a great world leader,” Speaker Hanshaw said. “We encourage all West Virginians to spend time during tomorrow’s National Day of Mourning to remember the life and legacy of President George H.W. Bush.

“As he said in his inaugural address, President Bush called upon the people of our country and rise up in the spirit of volunteerism to become ‘a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky,’” Speaker Hanshaw said. “I can think of no greater way to honor President Bush’s legacy than by spending not just this day, but the time ahead of us to think about what we can do to make this world a better place for all. Be it spending time with an elderly shut-in, donating to a local food bank, volunteering with a favorite charity, or doing something to honor the veterans who continue to sacrifice for our great country, I encourage all West Virginians to take this time to exemplify to duty, sacrifice, commitment and patriotism President George H.W. Bush embodied during his 94 years on this earth.”

Gov. Jim Justice on Tuesday announced all state offices would be closed Wednesday, Dec. 5, in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President George H.W. Bush.
