Delegate Kelly Invites Public To Honor First Responders with 'Heroes Day' Celebration

SISTERSVILLE, W.Va. – Delegate David Kelly, R-Tyler, today encouraged West Virginians to recognize and honor first responders this weekend as part of West Virginia’s annual “Heroes Day” commemoration, including an invitation to an event this Friday in Ritchie County.

Heroes Day, celebrated the second Saturday in September, is an event during which West Virginians are called to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of police officers, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel and all other first responders.

“It’s important for us to continually remember and honor our brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect our local communities,” Delegate Kelly said. “Heroes Day is a special occasion to remind us to go out of our way to show appreciation and gratitude for all their tremendous work.”

Ahead of the Saturday day of remembrance, Ritchie County will host a special Heroes Day ceremony and concert beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening at the Ritchie County 4-H Grounds in Harrisville. The free concert to honor and thank first responders will feature The Carriers, Jim Forshey as Elvis and former “The Voice” contestant Cody Wickline.

“We hope everyone can come out this Friday to celebrate and honor our tremendous first responders during this event,” Delegate Kelly said.

Heroes Day got its start in 2015, when Delegate Roger Romine, R-Doddridge, sponsored House Resolution 16, which designated the second Saturday of that September as a day to honor firefighters, law-enforcement officers and emergency medical services workers who are dedicated to helping those in need and protecting the public.

The day was also proclaimed to remember those brave first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

In 2017, Delegate Jason Harshbarger, R-Ritchie, worked with Gov. Jim Justice to issue a proclamation to designate the second Saturday of every September going forward as “Heroes Day” in West Virginia.
