HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 17

Requesting the bridge on Route 460 below the Mercer Mall at the
intersection of Route 19 near Bluefield, Mercer County, West
Virginia, specifically bridge number 28-19-5.40, be named "War
Veterans of Mercer County Memorial Bridge."
Whereas, Mercer County's war veterans have participated in
America's wars from the Revolutionary War to Iraqi Freedom and all
of the wars in between; and
Whereas, The war veterans of Mercer County participated in The
Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, War Between
the States (Civil War), Spanish-American War, World War I, World
War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring
Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and stand ready to serve their state and
country in the future; and
Whereas, The service the brave men and women of Mercer County,
West Virginia exemplifies the courage and bravery of West
Virginians in time of war and this service and sacrifice should not
go unnoticed and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, West Virginia
Division, Southern Brigade, in conjunction with the other Veterans
Organizations of Mercer County support and request that these services and sacrifices be recognized with a bridge in their honor
and memory; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name
bridge number 28-19-5.40 on Route 460 below the Mercer Mall at the
intersection of Route 19 near Bluefield, Mercer County, West
Virginia, be named "War Veterans of Mercer County Memorial Bridge";
and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Commissioner of the Division of
Highways is hereby requested to cause to be fabricated signs to be
erected at each entryway of the bridge, containing bold and
prominent letters proclaiming the bridge to be named the "War
Veterans of Mercer County Memorial Bridge"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of
the Division of Highways and the Veteran's Organizations of Mercer
County.
