Designating February 1, 2024, as National Unclaimed Property Day at the Legislature.
Whereas, The West Virginia Treasurer's Office joins in celebrating the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators in celebrating the 4th National Awareness Day, to help raise awareness to reunite West Virginians with their unclaimed property; and
Whereas, The State of West Virginia safeguards millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specific period of time; and
Whereas, The West Virginia Treasurer’s Office secures the property for the owner until it is claimed; and
Whereas, In FY 2023, the West Virginia Treasurer’s Office Unclaimed Property division processed over 27,000 claims and returned a record $26.8 million to owners or their heirs; and
Whereas, To find out if you have unclaimed property listed under your name, please visit the West Virginia Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property website at www.wvunclaimedproperty.gov and file your claim using this free service; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby designates February 1, 2024, as National Unclaimed Property Day at the Legislature; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Riley Moore, Treasurer of the State of West Virginia.
