HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 37
(By Mr. Speaker, Mr. Kiss, and Delegates Mahan, Susman,
Ron Thompson and Sumner)
[Adopted by the House of Delegates April 7, 2005]
"Commemorating the life of Sterling T. Lewis, gentleman, soldier
and statesman from the County of Raleigh"
Whereas, Sterling T. Lewis was born on September 3, 1925, in
Raven, Virginia, the son of the late Robert L. and Maggie M.
(Profitt) Lewis; and
Whereas, Mr. Lewis unselfishly served this Country as a member
of the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean
War; and
WHEREAS, Sterling Lewis was married on November 16, 1946, to
Helen A. Walker, and they had one son, Sterling T. Jr., who
followed him as a member of the House of Delegates and is currently
serving as the State Fire Marshall; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis also served with distinction and honor on
the Raleigh County Commission and held membership in L.O.O.M., B.
P. O. E., Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Raleigh County Association
for Mental Health and the Flat Top Lake Association;and
Whereas, Mr. Lewis, who resided in this State at Shady Spring in Raleigh County, served his State with honor and distinction in
this Legislative Body, first elected to the House of Delegates in
1974, and, thereafter, winning reelection in 1976 and 1978; and
Whereas, Mr. Lewis' departure from this earthly life should not
go unnoticed; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members of the House of
Delegates at the passing away of Sterling Lewis, gentleman, soldier
and statesman; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates
prepare certified copies of this Resolution for Mrs. Helen Lewis,
his surviving wife, for Sterling T. Lewis, Jr., his surviving son,
and a further copy for the Raleigh County Commission.
