HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 50

Designating and commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Wood
County, West Virginia.
Whereas, The General Assembly of Virginia, on December 21,
1798, passed "an act for the separation of Harrison County"
creating the county of Wood effective May 1, 1799, named for
James Wood, Governor of Virginia; and
Whereas, Wood Countians were instrumental in the creation of
the State of West Virginia on June 20, 1863, providing the state
with its first Governor, Arthur I. Boreman, and one of its first
two United States Senators, Peter G. Van Winkle; and
Whereas, The citizens of Wood County have been at the
forefront of the economic, social, and political development of
the State of West Virginia, having served the state and the
nation in war and in peace; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That in recognition of these contributions, the West
Virginia Legislature hereby designates May 1, 1999, as Wood
County Bicentennial Day throughout the State of West Virginia and
encourages its citizens to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the creation of Wood County; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the County
Commission of Wood County, West Virginia.
