HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 13

(By Delegates Border, Leggett and Romine)

[Introduced March 20, 2001; referred to the

Committee on Rules.]


Commemorating the passing of Donald Glade Michels, entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and statesman.

Whereas, Donald Glade Michels was born on the eighth day of June, one thousand nine hundred twenty-six, in West Union, Doddridge County, West Virginia, the son of Franklin Earl and Zelma L. Michels; and
Whereas, Donald Glade Michels was educated in the public schools of West Union and received an A.B. degree from West Virginia University. He was also a graduate of Salem College where he later served on the Board of Trustees and chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee that oversaw the construction of "The Valley of Learning" and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Salem College Personal Care Center; and
Whereas, Donald Glade Michels married the former Helen Dolores Cunningham of Clarksburg in one thousand nine hundred fifty, and they were the proud parents of two children, Donald H. Michels, M.D., and Jodyne Michels Christian, RPh; and
Whereas, Donald Glade Michels was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in one thousand nine hundred sixty-two from Doddridge County and he was later a candidate for Auditor of the State of West Virginia and the United States Senate; and
Whereas, Donald Glade Michels was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the West Union AM & FM Friendship Lodge No. 56. He was a Mason, Clarksburg Lodge of Perfection, Clarksburg Chapter Rose Croix, 32nd Degree Mason Wheeling Consistory, Nemesis Temple; and
Whereas, Donald Glade Michels gave unselfishly of himself to his country, his State, his county and his community and in so doing, left this world a better place than it was when he entered it; and
Whereas, The passing of Donald Glade Michels on the twenty-first day of July, two thousand, at the age of seventy-four, should not go unnoticed; therefore, be it
Resolved by the West Virginia House of Delegates:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members at the passing of Donald Glade Michels, entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and statesman; a man who loved his country, but above all he loved West Virginia and his fellowman; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to his son, Donald H. Michels, M.D., and his daughter, Jodyne Michels Christian, RPh.
