SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 8

Requesting the joint committee on government and finance to make a study of alternative methods of financing public education.

Whereas, A significant percentage of property taxes go to public education; and
Whereas, Other states have changed their methods of financing public education; and
Whereas, Property taxes may not be the best way to finance public education; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the joint committee on government and finance is hereby requested to study the needs of public education and other ways of financially supporting them rather than solely through property taxes; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the joint committee on government and finance report to the regular session of the Legislature, 1998, on its findings, conclusions and recommendations, together with drafts of any legislation necessary to effectuate its recommendations; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the expenses necessary to conduct this study, to prepare a report and to draft necessary legislation to be paid from legislative appropriations to the joint committee on government and finance.
