Senate Resolution No. 10

Recognizing Shepherd College on its one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary as an educational institution.

Whereas, Shepherd College opened its doors in September, 1871, as a private "classical and scientific" school and Joseph McMurran was named its first principal. The college was located in the building which had served as the Jefferson County Courthouse and was built by Rezin D. Shepherd and owned by his grandson, Shepherd Brooks; and
Whereas, In January, 1872, C. W. Andrews, A. R. Boteler, C. T. Butler, George M. Belthoover, David Billmeyer, Samuel Knott and Henry Shepherd signed the legal document incorporating Shepherd College. On February 27, 1872, the West Virginia Legislature passed an act establishing a normal school for teacher training at Shepherd College; and
Whereas, In 1943, the school's name was changed to Shepherd College, reflecting the broadening of its mission to include all the liberal arts and sciences. Shepherd College has seen tremendous growth in the last three decades, more than tripling its enrollment; and
Whereas, Over the last fifteen years, Shepherd College has been one of the few small, state-supported institutions of higher learning in the country to be regularly ranked among the nation's most competitive colleges and universities; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby recognizes Shepherd College on its one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary as an educational institution and further recognizes its outstanding contribution to the citizens of West Virginia through its educational excellence; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate joins in the celebration of this outstanding institution as its celebrates Shepherd College Day on Wednesday, February 26, 1997; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the president of Shepherd College.
