SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15

Honoring the Honorable John G. Chernenko, a member of the West Virginia Senate, for dedicated service to his state and his nation.

Whereas, The Honorable John G. Chernenko was first elected to the West Virginia Senate in 1982 and continues to serve his constituents of the First Senatorial District with outstanding dedication. He also serves the Senate in positions of great responsibility as the majority whip; chair of the Senate Committee on Labor; and a member of the committees on Energy Industry and Mining, Finance, Government Organization, Health and Human Resources and Military; and
Whereas, Prior to beginning his service to the state of West Virginia as a member of the Senate, Senator John G. Chernenko had already distinguished himself as a man of great strength and endurance. The Honorable John G. Chernenko served his nation during World War II in the United States Army and he fought in major campaigns during the war and was wounded in battle for which he received two Purple Heart medals. For being a member of the "lost battalion", the Honorable John G. Chernenko was awarded the Bronze Star; and
Whereas, The Honorable John G. Chernenko was taken as a prisoner of war and was forced to spend his twenty-first birthdayin a German prison camp. For this, he has received the Prisoner of War medal; and
Whereas, Following his outstanding and heroic military service, the Honorable John G. Chernenko received an appointment by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as the United States Marshal of the Northern District of West Virginia. He was again appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and served until 1969; and
Whereas, The Honorable John G. Chernenko has been recommended and will receive the West Virginia Meritorious Service Medal
for his outstanding achievements during World War II. He has been named an "Honorary Mountaineer Brigadier" by the Adjutant General of the State of West Virginia; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby expresses its sincere appreciation to the Honorable John G. Chernenko for his outstanding military service in the defense of peace during World War II; for his service to his nation, by presidential appointment, as a United States Marshal; and for his service to the people of West Virginia as a distinguished member of the West Virginia Senate; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable John G. Chernenko.
