SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15

(By Senators Plymale, Scott, Jackson, White, Wooton, Craigo, Bailey, Walker, Bowman, Prezioso, Helmick, Kessler, Dittmar, Anderson, Snyder, Sharpe, Ross, Schoonover, Love, Ball, Hunter, Sprouse, Oliverio, Macnaughtan, Boley, Minear, Deem, Buckalew, Kimble, Dugan and Tomblin, Mr. President)



Congratulating the Marshall University football team for winning the Mid-American Conference championship in its first year as a Division I-A football team.

Whereas, The Marshall University football team had an exceptional year during the 1997 season; and
Whereas, The Thundering Herd participated in and won the Mid- American Conference championship in its first year as a Division I- A football team; and
Whereas, Winning the Mid-American Conference championship earned Marshall University's football team its first bowl game in fifty years. Its participation in the Inaugural Motor City Bowl game in Pontiac, Michigan, caused a firestorm of excitement with Thundering Herd fans around the world and brought a great sense of pride to the Mountain State; and
Whereas, The 1997 football season was an award-winning season for Marshall University, with the players winning a total sixty-two honors and awards, including the Biletnlkoff Award and a nomination for the prestigious Heisman Trophy; and
Whereas, The outstanding leadership ability of Coach Bob Pruett and Athletic Director Lance West, and the athletic ability of players Roger Beckett, Doug Chapman, B.J. Cohen, Lavorn Colclough, John Grace, Mike Guilliams, Ricky Hall, Chris Hanson, Larry McCloud, Giradie Mercer, Randy Moss, Chad Pennington, Brian Reed, Bert Scarbrough, B.J. Summers, Paul Totten, Paul Toviessi and John Wade helped make the 1997 football season a championship year at Marshall University; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby commends the 1997 Marshall University football team for winning the Mid-American Conference championship and for its participation in the Inaugural Motor City Bowl game in Pontiac, Michigan; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate commends the 1997 Marshall University football team for winning sixty-two honors and awards during this outstanding football season; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the president of Marshall University, J. Wade Gilley, football coach Bob Pruett, athletic director Lance West and the members of the 1997 Marshall University Thundering Herd football team.
